Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary: With its green highlands, lush valleys and cool climate, Wayanad is one of the most beautiful retreats of Kerala. Wayanad wildlife sanctuary is contiguous to the protected areas of Nagarhole and Bandipur of Karnataka on the north-east and Mudumalai of Tamilnadu on the south-east. Rich in biodiversity, the sanctuary is an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. It is home to Tigers, Leopards, Sloth Bears, Wild Dogs, Jackals, and Indian Foxes besides the Gaur, Sambar, Spotted Dear, Indian Muntjac, Bonnet Macaque, Black-naped Hare, Wild Boar, and Giant Squirrel. Wayanad is a paradise for birdwatching. Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary (Karnataka): This is a small bird Sanctuary on the Cauvery river just 11km from Mysore. This place gives an excellent opportunity for bird watching and photographing of nesting and feeding birds from close quarters. The main bird life includes the Painted Storks, River Terns, Asian Open bills, Pelicans, Egrets etc. The small 30 min boat ride on this river offers good opportunities to watch Marsh Crocodiles also.
